The Two Irelands

St. Patrick’s day is coming up and I think John Boehner is Irish(he wears a lot of green ties) maybe of German decent. Who knows? I am writing this post because for my many years on earth I did not understand what the difference was between the two Irelands. I watched a Youtube video on Ireland to determine which one was cool and which one was lame. So here we go my summary of the two Irelands.

Northern Ireland is a part of England. They use English money and are not a separate or sovereign state. Within Northern Ireland there are separatists who want Northern Ireland to break away from England.

The separatists in Northern Ireland want to join the sovereign country called The Republic of Ireland(south of northern Ireland). While the loyalists are the residents of Northern Ireland who want to remain part of England.

The English government and therefore the loyalists are associated with one of the protestant religious sects. While the Republic of Ireland and the separatists are associated with the Catholic Church.

So the violence that took place for years, had it’s front-line mainly in the English territory of Northern Ireland. Armed groups financed by The larger English and Republic of Ireland governments conducted bombings and shootings against their own Irish brothers over politics and religion.

So in summary the cool one would be the Republic of Ireland and the loyalists because just like the United States of America they kicked England’s butt. Unfortunately Northern Ireland did not gain independence but the loyalists groups eventually got some legitimate political representation in Northern Ireland. Most importantly today there is no war and the two sides live in peace.
